Suited for councils looking to establish standards proactively to prevent issues. The focus is on how people communicate, regulate emotion, and work together, even with different political leanings.
It is particularly suited to:
* Councils that have signed or are about to sign the Civility and Respect Pledge. * New councils or post-election resets. * Councils with new clerks or chairs. *Smaller Parish Councils who might not have the budget for in-person training.
Practical and Preventative
Delivers practical and structured training to create a culture of civility and respect. A psychologically informed course that strengthens leadership, supports professionalism and builds councils that can disagree well and function effectively.
About the Course
This course goes beyond policy and compliance. It explores the human dynamics that shape behaviour inside councils. Why meetings escalate. Why email tone shifts. Why debate turns personal. And how repair becomes possible. Grounded in psychology and real council experience, this training is for everyone within the council. It helps members, clerks and officers understand how group behaviour works under pressure. It connects the principles of the Code of Conduct to everyday communication, power dynamics and emotional regulation. Participants will learn how to: • Debate strongly without damaging relationships • Recognise and interrupt escalation patterns • Set clear behavioural boundaries • Repair after rupture rather than entrench division • Create a culture of safety, inclusion and shared responsibility It is practical, psychologically informed development that strengthens leadership, restores professionalism and builds councils that can disagree well and function effectively.
About the Creator
Becky Walsh is the founder of Council Culture, a specialist training and advisory business supporting UK town, community and parish councils. Becky brings together psychology, behaviour, communication and lived experience in local government and has been a trainer for the SLCC for almost a decade. She works with officers, clerks, councillors and chairs to create shared language, clear standards and calmer ways of handling pressure, disagreement and public scrutiny. Becky is a qualified counsellor and coach, with a background in communications, training and performance. She translates complex psychological ideas into plain English and practical action that works inside real council settings. Council Culture training is known for being human, grounded and effective. Participants understand why behaviour happens, how power dynamics show up, and what to do differently next time. This leads to better meetings, clearer decision making and healthier working relationships. Council Culture delivers training online and in person across the UK, including civility and respect, creating a strategy, communications and engagement, leadership under pressure and culture reset work. These online courses are designed to give councils accessible, practical learning they can return to again and again. www.councilculture.uk
